Kwan San Oscar Hui is a Full Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Prince Mohammad Bin Fahd University in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Before this role, he served as a Lecturer in Mechanical Engineering (2016-2019) and as a Reader in Energy Storage and Conversion (2019-2024) at the School of Engineering, University of East Anglia, UK. He has also held academic positions as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Hanyang University, South Korea (2013-2016), and as a Lecturer in Systems Engineering and Engineering Management at City University of Hong Kong (2008-2013). Dr. Hui earned his PhD in Mechanical Engineering from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology in 2008.
Dr. Hui has been recognized among the world’s top 2% of scientists in the fields of Materials, Energy, and Nanoscience & Technology from 2020 to 2024. He has published 250 peer-reviewed SCI papers in prestigious journals, including Energy & Environmental Science, Advanced Materials, Advanced Energy Materials, Nano Energy, and ACS Nano. His h-index is 64, with a total of 13,000+ citations (Web of Science). Dr. Hui is the holder of one US patent (US9040007B2) and serves on various international expert panels, including the Slovak Research and Development Agency. He reviews proposals for the Newton International Fellowships at the Royal Society, UK, and is a member of the UKRI Talent Peer Review College. He holds full membership with the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) in the UK and is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry (UK) and a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (UK).

Description: This work introduces a novel and impactful strategy by incorporating inner-layer indium dopants into sulfur-deficient MoS₂ (In‑Vs‑MoS₂), marking a significant advance in sulfur-redox electrocatalysis for lithium–sulfur (Li–S) batteries. The key novelty lies in the synergistic use of defect engineering (sulfur vacancies) and indium doping, which reduces surface energy and creates unpaired electrons near the Fermi level. This optimizes charge distribution and strengthens polysulfide adsorption, effectively enhancing redox kinetics. The result is a highly stable, high-rate, and high-capacity Li–S system. This breakthrough paves the way for scalable, durable Li–S batteries, bringing the technology significantly closer to practical, real-world energy applications.

Description: This work presents a novel electrolyte design using a fluorinated weakly solvated system to stabilize phosphorus-based anodes, addressing the long-standing challenges of lithium polyphosphide dissolution, irreversible capacity loss, and poor rate performance. The high dielectric cosolvent effectively improves ion transport and SEI formation, enabling a record-high capacity of 2615 mAh g⁻¹, 91.7% retention over 1,000 cycles, and fast-charging at low temperatures. This breakthrough offers a practically viable and scalable electrolyte strategy for next-generation high-energy lithium-ion batteries, with transformative impact on electric mobility and grid storage.

Description: This work presents a self-adaptive bismuth-based composite anode for high-performance potassium-ion batteries (PIBs), addressing the critical challenge of large volume expansion during cycling.
