Dr Haythem Nakkas is an Associate Professor in the Department of Management Information Systems at the College of Business Administration, PMU, KSA. He holds a PhD in Computing from the University of Portsmouth, UK (2018), an MSc in Computing from the University of Teesside, UK (2010), and an undergraduate degree in Computing from Surman College of Science and Technology, Libya (2004).
Dr Nakkas has extensive experience in higher education, including significant work in UK institutions. With more than 20 years of experience, he has taught and supervised students at undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral levels. He began his career at Surman Faculty of Science and Technology, Libya, where he served as a Lecturer and Director of the Information and Documentation Office. Prior to joining PMU, he was the Director of the MSc in Information Systems programme at the School of Computing, University of Portsmouth, UK. He also contributed to the planning and launch of the University’s London campus, leading the MSc Information Systems course during the planning phase and mentoring new staff after its opening to ensure effective programme delivery. He also worked at the University of Wales Trinity Saint David, UK. In addition, Dr Nakkas contributes to the academic community as a reviewer for reputable journals and international conferences in health and medical informatics, including the Journal of Innovation in Health Informatics, Medical Informatics Europe, and MedInfo.

Over the course of his academic career, Dr Nakkas has taught and coordinated a broad portfolio of modules at undergraduate and postgraduate levels in the areas of computing, information systems, database technologies, software development, and business information systems. His teaching has included modules such as Cyber Security for Information Systems, Managing Information Systems, Database Systems Development, Database Principles, Software Project Management, Social and Legal Aspects of Computing, Introduction to Database Design and Development, Advanced Database Concepts, Web Foundations, Business Information Systems, ICT Skills, Computer Architecture, Information Systems Management, Research Methods, Systems Analysis and Design, Principles of Programming, Software Engineering, Visual Basic Programming.
Dr Nakkas’s research interests focus on digital health, inter-organisational information systems, health information infrastructures, and the adoption of digital systems with particular emphasis on the implementation and evaluation of digital health technologies. His research examines electronic health records, interoperability, health information exchange, and their impact on clinical decision-making and healthcare delivery. He also has an interest in the adoption of health information technology in developing countries, including the organisational, social, and technical factors that influence successful implementation.
Dr Nakkas is a Professional Member of BCS, The Chartered Institute for IT. He also contributes to the wider academic community through reviewer and editorial roles for leading journals and international conferences, including the Journal of Innovation in Health Informatics, Medical Informatics Europe (MIE), and MedInfo.
