VISTING SENIOR PROFESSOR
Erasmo Carrera graduated in Aeronautics in 1986 and in Space Engineering in 1988 at the Politecnico di Torino. He obtained his Phd in Aerospace Engineering in 1991 in the framework of a joint PhD programme between the Politecnico di Milano, Politecnico di Torino and the Universit di Pisa. He became Assistant professor in 1992, Associate Professor (2000) and Full Professor (2010) at the Politecnico di Torino
Carrera has been author and coauthor of about 800 papers on the above topics, most of which have been published in first-rate international journals, including six recent books, three of these published by J Wiley & Sons. Carrera's papers have had more than 19500 citations with h-index=69 (data taken from Google-Scholar). Most of the papers, in particular those concerning the activities of the last decade, have been coauthored by Master students, PhD students, Italian colleagues, foreign professors and scientists from industry. Carrera has been recipient of various 'best paper award'.
Due to his international reputation, Carrera has held Invited Seminars in various European and North- American Universities, as well as plenary talks in international conferences. Dr. Carrera serves as Associate Editor for Composite Structures, J Thermal Stress, Computer and Structures, International Journal of Smart and Nano Materials and the International Journal of Aeronautical and Space Sciences. Hi is founder and Editor-in-Chief of Advances in Aircraft and Spacecraft Science, first Issue January 2014. He acts as Editor-in-Chief of Mechanics of Advanced Materials Structures. He acts has reviewers for about 100 journals and is on the Editorial Board of many international conferences. He has been charge of the Chapter on 'Shells' for the Encyclopedia of Thermal Stress published by Springer as well as of the Section 'Composites' on the coming Springer Encyclopedia of 'Computational Mechanics' .

Carrera is the founder of the non-profit International Conference DeMEASS whose VIII Edition is scheduled for October 2020 Italy and main organizer of the following conferences: ICMNMMCS, Torino, June 2012, co-chaired by Prof A Ferreira; the ECCOMASS SMART 13 conference, Torino, June 2013; ISVCS IX, Courmayeur, July 2013. He is General Chairman of ISVCS 11 & 12. Founder of ICMAMS. He has been member of PhD and Habilitation committees in Germany, France, The Netherlands and Portugal, India, China.
Dr Carrera has been responsible for various research contracts granted by public and private national (including regional ones) and international institutions, such as IVECO, the Italian Ministry of Education, the European Community, European Space Agency, Alenia Spazio, Thales Alenia Space, Regione Piemonte, Embraer (Brazil). Among others prof Carrera has been responsible for the structural design and analysis of full composite aircraft, named Sky-Y, by Alenia Aeronautica Torino, the first full-composite UAV made in Europe.
Professor Carrera is founder and leader of the MUL2 group at the Politecnico di Torino. The MUL2 group is considered one of the most active research team at Politecnico; it has acquired a significant international reputation in the _eld of multilayered structures subjected to multifield loadings, see also www.mul2.com. Some of Carrera's ex-students have assumed Academic positions in the US and in the Europe (L Demasi at San Diego University, D'ottavio at Paris Ouest, M. Boscolo at City University London, C. Fagiano at Cachan, Paris, F. Fazzolari at Cambridge).
Dr. Carrera has been visiting professor at the Institute of Static and Dynamics of the University of Stuttgart (6 months in 1991 and 15 months in 1995-1996); he spent 3 months at the department of Engineering Science and Mechanics of Virginia Tech in 1996; 3 months at Supmeca, Paris, in 2006; and 3 months at the Centre of Research Public H Tudor (Luxembourg) in the summer of 2009. In 2013 he has got a joint appointment at School of Aerospace, Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering at Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology of University of Melbourne, Australia. In 2013 as HiCi Scientist Carrera became member of Distinguished Professor Committee of King Abdulaziz University, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
SERIES OD SEMINARS ON COMPUTATIONAL MECHANICS.
Prof Carrera has been tutor of about 400 Bachelor and Master Theses and about 30 PhDs in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Fluid Dynamics. His research topics cover: composite materials, nonlinear problems and the stability of structures, vibrations of continuous systems, nonlinear dynamics, contact mechanics, multibody dynamics, finite elements, path following methods in nonlinear FE analysis, meshless methods, unconventional lifting systems, smart structures, thermal stress for coupled and uncoupled problems, multifield interaction, aeroelasticity, panel flutter, wind blades, explosion effects on flying aircraft, advanced theories for beams, plates and shells, mixed variational methods; zig-zag, mixed and layer-wise modelings for multilayered beams plates and shells; local-global methods and the Arlequin-type approach; advanced structural models for wings, fuselage and complete
aircraft/spacecraft by introducing the so-called component-wise approach; failure and progressive failure analysis of laminated structures; inflatable structures for manned and unmanned space applications; design and analysis of full composite aircraft, including trikes and unmanned arial vehicles (UAVs).
Carrera has introduced the Reissner Mixed Variational Theorem, RMVT, as a natural extension of the Principle of Virtual Displacement to layered structure analysis. He has further established the fundament advantages of using RMVT ideas in multifield problems to directly compute the electric charge a piezoelectric electrodes.
Carrera has introduced the Unified Formulation, or CUF (Carrera Unifed Formulation), as a tool to establish a new framework in which to develop theories of beams, plates and shells for metallic and composite multilayered structures loaded by mechanical, thermal electrical and magnetic loadings. CUF has been applied extensively to both strong and weak forms (FE and meshless solutions). The main feature of CUF is that it permits any expansion of the unknown variables over the thickness/cross-section
domain to be handled in a compact manner. Governing equations are in fact obtained in terms of a few fundamental nuclei whose forms do not depend on the order of the used expansion or on the used base functions. As a result, CUF permits the so-called Best Theory Diagram (BTD) (which shows the minimum number of unknown variables vs error on an assigned parameter) to be computed for a given problem. The BTD is of a way to enhance to axiomatic and asymptotic approaches in the theory of structures. Component Wise approaches and node dependent kinematic Finite Elements are the two latest finding in the CUF application to structural analysis.
He is president of the Piedmont Section of AIDAA (Associazione Italiana di Aeronautica ed Astronautica) and Senior Member of AIAA. He has been elected National President of A.I.D.A.A. for the coming years 2018-2022.
Professor Carrera is member of the Accademia delle Scienze di Torino, which was founded in 1757 by L. Lagrange.

Professor Carrera has been Highly Cited Researchers (Top 100 Scientist) by Thompson Reuters in the two Sections: Engineering and Materials. He has been confirmed HiCI in 2015 in the Section Engineering. The only aerospace Engineering worldwide.
Due to his scientific outcoming professor Carrera has been recently awarded by the President of Italian Republic, as 'Honoray Commendator'. It consist of one of the highest award in Italy and it has been given to only 73 Italian Scientists from 2003.
