He received his BSc+MSc (5 years’ program, 28 annual subjects, plus research thesis) in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Florence, Italy, in May 1984. He then received his Ph.D. degree (3 years’ program plus research thesis) in Energy Engineering from the University of Florence, Italy, in May 1989.
In between the end of the undergraduate studies and the start of the postgraduate studies, he was an officer of the Italian Army Technical Corp dealing with maintenance and modification of armored vehicles. After the Ph.D., for 19 years, he has then been senior researcher and manager of departments/projects in the mobility industry, mostly within the Fiat Group, Turin, Italy, dealing with research and development, and production, of internal combustion engines for passenger cars, light- and heavy-duty trucks, and racing cars and motorcycles. During the years within the industry, he was also a contract professor of Mechanical Engineering for 4 years in Italy with the University of Modena, Italy. In 2006, when he was the manager of four-stroke engines for Aprilia racing, Noale, Italy working on superbike engines, he decided to leave the industry to go back to work for the university, joining the University of Melbourne, Australia as a senior research fellow and facility manager. For 13 years he has been senior research fellow, associate professor, and then professor, of Mechanical Engineering, within universities in Australia and the United States, including the University of Melbourne, the University of Ballarat, Missouri University of Science and Technology, James Cook University, RMIT University, and West Virginia University. He has been deputy head of the Department of Mechanical Engineering in the Military Technological College, Oman, and researcher in Applied Sciences with Ton Duc Thang University, Vietnam.
